Image: 2016 SPORT CHEK CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS – DOWNHILL RESULTS

Whistler BC, Wednesday, March 23, 2016 - In tough weather conditions, the 2016 Canadian Alpine Ski Championships kicked off Wednesday with the men’s and ladies’ downhill competition. Fog, rain and snow all played big factors, causing delays, a slew of DNFs and extra slipping time.

The men pushed out of the start gate first and it was a great homecoming for Whistler native, Morgan Pridy (CAST/WMSC) who captured top spot.

“It’s really great to be back here and it’s so nice to race at home! I feel like I have a small advantage being back here but it’s a great group to race with,” said Pridy of his winning run and being back at his home hill. “The visibility was pretty good but the course was a bit soft; that’s springtime skiing for you!”

COMPLETE FIS RESULTS WILL BE POSTED WHEN AVAILABLE

Photo from BC Alpine website: www.bcalpine.com
Morgan Pridy (CAST/WMSC)

Teammate and fellow Whistler local, Broderick Thompson (CAST/WMSC), joined Pridy on the podium in second-place, trailing by just 0.65 seconds. Riley Seger, U19 WMSC athlete from BC Ski Team, took third place, finishing just 1.05 seconds back from the first-place time. Seger is the Canadian Men's Jr downhill champion and third overall! BC Team's Max Peiffer rounds out the Jr men's podium in 3rd.

Riley Seger (BCST/WMSC)

The weather caused big delays for the ladies’ race as bad weather rolled in and out. It was a tough start for the ladies as the first three racers put up DNF results, but Mont Tremblant’s Valérie Grenier came down with a blazing run to capture first-place, winning the Canadian Championships downhill title. This win comes after Grenier secured first-place at the World Junior Championships downhill in Russia earlier this month.

“I’m really happy to finish first here today. It’s what I was going for and I’m glad I could finish off the season with a first-place result,” said Grenier of today’s finish. “It was a pretty decent run despite the track being pretty slow from all the snow.”

U19 athlete, Stefanie Fleckenstein of BC Ski Team, who also represented Canada at the World Junior Championships in Russia, took second-place today finishing 0.97 seconds back from Grenier.

“Having been able to ski the downhill at World Juniors was really great preparation for me and it’s been great learning so much from Val (Grenier)," said Fleckenstein. "I am so happy with my result in today's downhill and getting to share the podium with not only Val, the world junior DH champion, but also my little sister! It's really cool to see the younger girls pushing themselves against some of the best skiers in the country. I can't wait for the races to come and am excited to see how I stack up against the Canadian girls."

Katie Fleckenstein (left) with sister Stefanie Fleckenstein (right)

Rounding out the podium in third was Katie Fleckenstein, another U19 athlete from the Whistler Mountain Ski Club (and sister of Stefanie), who sat 3.20 seconds off the lead-time.

"It was super fun getting to race against my older sister and some of the National Team girls like Candice Crawford and Valerie Grenier," said the younger Fleckenstein. "This being my home mountain made it extra special to preform in front of so many of my friends. The heros today were the vollies that made the race happen in spite of fog and snow and a soft race track. I m looking forward to the rest of the week."

The next 2016 Canadian Championship race will be a super G. Stay tuned for results and updates.

SUPER G - Saturday, March 26, 2016

The super-G took place under picture-perfect skies on a bulletproof track. The straight set allowed for high speeds on the best conditions so far at this national championships. 38 ladies and 85 men pushed out of the start gate.

The ladies’ raced first, taking advantage of a pristine track. Coming off a two-podium season, Quebec’s Marie-Michèle Gagnon skied to her 12th Canadian Championship win.

“The track was the best I’ve seen in the last few days. It wasn’t too fast but a perfect run,” said Gagnon. “It was a nice sunny day on an easy, flowy course. I’m excited to have captured my 12th win in the Championships and I want to clean up in the rest of the races in the series!”

Young gun and up-and-coming speed superstar, Candace Crawford from Ontario, wore bib number four and skied in behind Gagnon trailing by 0.98 seconds.

Quebec’s Valérie Grenier rounded out the ladies’ podium finishing in third-place, 1.06 seconds back from Gagnon’s time. Grenier won the Canadian Championship downhill earlier this week.

BC's Manuel Osborne-Paradis captured the men’s super-G Canadian Championship title by just 0.07 seconds exciting fans in the finish. This is Osborne-Paradis’ third Championship title and first in super G.

Phil Brown from Ontario traded in his usual technical gear for some speed skis, nailing his run to finish in second-place.

“Super fun today skiing here in Whistler and kinda fun to be back involved in speed skiing after a tech season,” said Brown. “It’s nice to be back on the long skis and it worked out really well today!”

Rounding out the men’s podium was Tyler Werry (Fernie Alpine Ski Team) sitting just 0.11 seconds back from the fastest time.

Stefanie Fleckenstein (BCST/WMSC) was the second fastest junior in the women's race, and BC men dominated their junior podium, with Jack Crawford (CAST/WMSC), Brodie Seger (CAST/WMSC) and Riley Seger (BCST/WMSC) taking first, second and third respectively.

ALPINE COMBINED

Alberta’s Trevor Philp and Ontario’s Candace Crawford laid down a pair of runs today to capture the Canadian Champion title in the alpine combined event. Crawford finished the super G in second-place just behind BC Ski Team's Stefanie Fleckenstein, who laid down the fastest super-G run of the day, but did not finish the slalom portion for a result in the alpine combined.

The athletes went into the slalom knowing they were battling soft conditions. Crawford attacked the course to ski the fastest slalom run of the day, taking first-place in the alpine combined event. This is Crawford’s second Canadian Championship title.

“Today was a great day! Slalom was a bit up and down this year but I knew going in it would be bumpy and I just had to go with it,” said Crawford of her slalom run. “I’m really excited to be Canadian Champ!”

Development Team athlete Ali Nullmeyer took second-place today moving up two spots after finishing fourth in the super G run. U19 athlete, Stephanie Currie from the Ontario Ski Team, rounded out the ladies’ race.

After the first handful of racers battled tough visibility conditions, the skies cleared just in time for Philp’s super G run as he skied into a sixth-place. The up-and-coming technical superstar put down a great slalom run to capture the alpine combined win, bringing his Canadian Championship tally to three.

“It was a lot fun to be out here today,” said Philp. “The conditions were definitely tough but we knew that going in watching everyone fighting through the track. I’m really happy to be Canadian Champion!”

Joining Philp on the podium is Development Team athlete Brodie Seger (WMSC) and National Team athlete Phil Brown.

MACKENZIE INVESTMENTS WHISTLER CUP – DAY 1
Whistler, BC (March 31, 2016) – Alpine’s next generation of World Cup hopefuls have taken over Whistler Mountain for the Mackenzie Investments Whistler Cup international youth race. Today the racers strapped on their speed skis for a super G race under sunny skis and warm temperatures.

Team Canada had a strong start in today’s race capturing three of six podium spots in the U16 category.

On the ladies’ side, in first place is Norway’s Marte Monsen, age 16, putting down a ripper of a run despite warm weather deteriorating the track. “It’s my first time to Whistler and Whistler Cup and it’s so great!” said Monsen. “The course was a little rough but I’m happy with my result.”

Team Canada went second and third on the ladies’ podium. Fifteen-year-old Eloise Carle was 1.15 seconds back from the lead-time and teammate Sierra Smith, age 16, rounded out the podium sitting 1.37 seconds back from first-place.

“My run was good but the track was sketchy,” said Canada’s Carle. “The course was really beat up because of the warm weather but I’m happy with how I handled it.”

The men, who benefited from an earlier start time, had a track that held up a little better.

Wilhelm Normannseth, age 15, made it a double gold day for Norway capturing first-place.

“When I came down I was very surprised that I won,” said Normannseth. “It was a hard course with big turns and I was running quite late but I managed some great turns. This is my first time at Whistler Cup and I would say it’s the greatest ski experience I’ve ever had! It’s an enormous alpine resort and I think it’s really great.”

In second-place is 16-year-old Ben Richards from New Zealand, trailing by 1.33 seconds. Canada’s 15-year-old Jamie Casselman rounded out the podium after recovering from a near fall early in the race.

“My run was good but a bit of a wild ride!” said Casselman. “I broke my pole early in the course so it was difficult to balance. I nailed a gate and it hurt quite a bit but I managed to recover. This is my fifth time at Whistler Cup and I’m excited for the rest of the weekend!”

Tomorrow the men are racing slalom and the women will be putting down a giant slalom race.

MACKENZIE INVESTMENTS WHISTLER CUP – DAY 2 RESULTS

Whistler, BC (April 2, 2016) – Spring weather continues to be a factor in day two of the Mackenzie Investments Whistler Cup races as the warm weather wreaks havoc on the track. Thanks to the Race Organizing Committee and tireless volunteers, both races were completed. Today the ladies put down two giant slalom runs, while the men raced a slalom course.

On the ladies’ side, it was another Canadian on the podium in second-place, flanked by yesterday’s winner from Norway who captured first-place again, and Japan who took third-place.

Marta Monsen from Norway lead the pack by 0.75 seconds over Canada’s Éloïse Carle from Blainville, QC, who finished in second-place. Japan’s Yukin Hatanaka finished in third-place, trailing by 1.09 seconds.

“It feels great to have another win today!” said Monsen. “It feels really good to be in Canada and when you’re skiing great, it’s even better. Today was tough skiing and you really had to fight all the way down.”

Fifteen-year-old Carle, who grew up skiing at Mont Olympia in Quebec, took her second podium-finish of the Mackenzie Investments Whistler Cup series today. “The weather today continued to be really warm making the track really rough,” said Carle. “It was still a really fun day and both the course sets were really great. Tough conditions mean you just have to fight a little harder. I’m having a really great time here at Whistler Cup and I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s slalom race. It’s my favourite discipline so I’m excited to go for it!”

On the men’s track, British Columbia’s Jamie Casselman found the podium for a second day in a row at the Mackenzie Invesments Whistler Cup, finishing in second-place in the slalom race. Casselman, age 15, from the Panorma Ski Club is competing for the fifth time at Whistler Cup.

“The first run was a bit slower than the second run but I put together two solid runs today,” said Casselman. “I held on for a rough second run as the conditions started deteriorating. I’m really happy with how things are going so far and I’m looking forward to tomorrow!”

Casselman finished 4.14 seconds back from Norway’s Wilhelm Normannseth who lead the pack in the men’s slalom.

“My first run was pretty good and I stood on my outside ski the whole way down,” said Normannseth who captured first-place two days in a row. “The second run was also good, not as good as the first but it was definitely a good run. I’m pretty happy with my results and happy to be here!”

Rounding out the podium is another Norwegian, Kaspar Kindem, who trailed the lead-time by 5.75 seconds. Not far behind, in fourth place, was 14 year old Whistler Mountain Ski Club racer Nathan Romanin representing Team BC 1.

Sunday the men and ladies swap disciplines as the men race giant slalom and ladies switch to slalom.

Whistler, BC (April 3, 2016) – Sunday closed out the final races at the 24th annual Mackenzie Investments Whistler Cup. Athletes between the ages of 12 and 15 from 18 countries competed in three disciplines.

Norway dominated the podium today with a first and third on the ladies’ podium, and a first ND second on the men’s side.

Marte Monsen from Norway goes three for three in wins in the ladies’ field. “My race was great today. It was tough up there but it was really fun,” said Monsen. “The second run was tougher with snow and coming down in the back of the pack made it challenging. It was really awesome to be here and I’m so happy! I want to thank my coach and my mom, dad and brother.”

Mont Olympia’s Éloïse Carle took today’s second spot, trailing the first-place time by 3.02 seconds. The fifteen-year-old Quebec native leaves the 2016 Whistler Cup with three silver medals, hitting the podium in all the races she competed in.

“My first run was good but the second run wasn’t so great,” said Carle. “On the third gate I almost skied out but I was able to recover. The conditions weren’t great and I was really hoping for a first-place finish today after sitting in first-place after the first run.”

In third-place on the ladies’ podium is Norway's Biance Bakke-Westhoff, 4.33 seconds back from the lead-time.

The men’s podium had two Norwegians sitting in the top spots with Kaspar Kindem in first-place and Wilhelm Normannseth in second-place, sitting 0.88 seconds back from the lead-time. In third-place sits New Zealand’s Ben Richards who was 1.30 seconds behind Kindem.

“I put down the greatest run of my life in the second giant slalom run today,” said Kindem. “I’m really happy with how things have gone here and especially with today’s result.”

Jamie Casselman, from Panorama Ski Club in British Columbia, was Canada’s fastest male athlete of the day with an overall fourth-place finish. Casselman has also secured a second and third-place finish during this year's Whistler Cup.

“My first run was definitely much better than the second,” said Casselman. “The conditions deteriorated the track and my second run was definitely a wild ride! It’s been a great weekend of competition and I’m really happy with how everything went.”

Norway closes out the Mackenzie Invesments Whistler Cup capturing the Nation's Cup!

Alpine Canada Alpin congratulates all the athletes on another exciting year of competition and thanks the volunteers, coaches and countless other supporters of the next generation of World Cup hopefuls.

Fidelity Spring Series underway in Whistler; Fleck, Pridy, Thompson win SG

The 2016 Fidelity Spring Series, hosted by WMSC on the Dave Murray National Training center, commenced on Monday after a week of above average temperatures and clear evenings, which allowed the snow to solidify somewhat.

BC Ski Team’s Stefanie Fleckenstein took full advantage of an early start number to lay down what proved to be the fastest time for the ladies. Ontario Ski Team’s Stephanie Currie continued her great skiing from the Canadian Championships to claim 2nd spot (+1.32 seconds), and U18 racer Andrea Louise Arnold from Czech Republic was third (+1.5 seconds).

The men inherited the “experienced” course from the ladies and proceeded to work over the softening snow over the next 140 racers. Morgan Pridy continued where he left off after the speed events at the Nationals, winning the race, followed by Tyler Werry, 0.2secs off the pace. Technical ace and Canadian Champion in SL, Ontario’s Phil Brown, edged Whistler’s Brodie Seger for the final podium spot.

The BC Men’s ski team posted impressive results in the stacked field, led by Riley Seger in 7th (+1.08) Cameron Alexander and Sam Mulligan tied in 10th (+1.48), and Max Kirshenblatt and Max Peiffer separated by 2/100ths in 12th and 13th respectively. BC Team's Kirshenblatt also found himself in a familiar spot atop the U18 podium Monday.

"It feels great to end the speed season successfully and it's been a blast doing it here at my home mountain racing against a field full of my ski racing idols," said Kirshenblatt. "Over the past two days whistler has lived up to the stereotypes giving us rain and challenging racing conditions, but all the volunteers worked hard and pulled off a good race"

Fleckenstein found the course conditions challenging: “It was a pretty turny set, given the soft conditions. The course crew had to work pretty hard to keep the transitions in raceable condition. I was happy to have bib 3 today, I’m sure the 140th guy skied a way different course than I did.”

Weather conditions changed overnight into Tuesday, with snow at the start and rain at the bottom, adding to the pervious day’s challenges. The course ran about 5 seconds faster than on Monday as the set reflected the softening snow, especially on the final pitch to the finish.

Fleckenstein made it 2 for 2, beating Ontario Ski Team's Stephanie Currie in 2nd by 1.61. Alberta's Sarah Taylor rounded out the podium in 3rd.

"I love racing at Whistler," said Fleckenstein. "It’s an awesome speed hill with steeps, flats and lots of terrain at this time of the year. After a long year on the road, I really appreciate the support that all of us on the BC Ski Team when we're back home. It was also nice to have Mikayla Martin back in the start after 8 weeks on the sideline, and a quick shout out to Toni Wearmouth as well. Finally, thanks to all of the volunteers who took time off work to keep the track safe.”

On the men’s side, Broderick Thompson finally broke Pridy’s stranglehold on speed events on the DMNTC, claiming the win ahead of Canadian Development Team member Jeffrey Read. Pridy did find his way onto the podium in 3rd spot (+.41 seconds). BCST’s Sam Mulligan in 8th and Max Kirshenblatt in 9th were the sole survivors on the rapidly deteriorating course. The men’s race was finally called after 71 racers, in the interest of athlete safety, as the foggy conditions and soft snow finally had their say.

Gold medal sweep for the unstoppable Stef Fleck at Fidelity Spring Series

The 2016 Fidelity Spring Series racers enjoyed Whistler Mountain’s return to seasonal average temperatures after a week of warmer than normal weather. Dale Stephens and the rest of the WMSC crew kept the Dave Murray National Training Center slope in race-able condition with the use of strategic grooming, eco-friendly snow hardeners and good old fashioned muscle-power.

132 men lined up on Thursday for the first of 2 GS races starting at the top of Raven and ending at the top of Sunset Pitch. Top Canadian Team talent sprinkled in with some US Ski Team racers allowed for a low penalty, with race winner Tyler Werry (CAST) scoring 11.25 FIS points. Canadian SL Champion Phil Brown captured 2nd overall, winning the second run by 1/100th over Werry. World Cup regular Trevor Philp claimed the final podium spot, +.24 seconds to Werry. BC Ski Team veteran Dominic Unterberger finished 8th with teammate Riley Seger 13th and Sam Mulligan 17th, rounding out the first page of results. Japan’s Yohei Koyama was the top U18 in 9thth place.

Temperatures started easing higher on Friday for the second men’s GS, which made for difficult course conditions on the Raven and Club 21 pitches. Big core strength was a key ingredient for negotiating the rutted track. Phil Brown (1st) traded podium spots with Tyler Werry (2nd), with US World Cup racer Tanner Farrow in 3rd. National Development Team’s Brodie Seger (WMSC) skied to a strong 5th place, top U21 in the field. Brother Riley Seger of the BC Ski Team was 9th with teammate Dominic Unterberger putting down his 2nd consecutive strong GS of the series in 10th. Sam Mulligan also made page 1 of the results in 15th.

The Stefanie Show continued for the second GS with a narrow 1/100th sec margin over Alberta Ski Team’s Georgia Burgess. First run leader Emma Woodhouse and Fleckenstein both suffered from a rapidly decaying course as the set on the outside of the pitches crumbled rapidly with each successive racer. WMSC’s Gabby Smith, Laura Swaffield and Antoinette Tansley all made top 20, finishing 10th, 13th and 16th, respectively.

The weekend warming trend continued, with overcast skies preventing the wet snow needed to get the full effect of the hardener. The result was a heavily rutted SL track that started at the top of Club 21 and finished at the top of Sunset Pitch. The hard charging style of Canada’s top SL skiers quickly rutted the course and ballooned the time gaps after the top 20 men of the 135 strong field. Trevor Philip won both runs to take top podium spot, ahead of Phil Brown. US Ski Team’s Hig Roberts was 3rd followed by speed skier turned SL ace Brodie Seger. Sam Mulligan in 9th place led the BC Team charge with Riley Seger in 14th. WMSC alum Ford Swette took 17th spot, with some smart tactical skiing.

Saturday’s overnight temperatures stayed above freezing, which made for a smooth course during inspection and a rut factory for the race. Phil Brown enjoyed bib 2 for the first run, and put down the fastest time by almost 2 seconds. He followed that up with the 2nd fastest 2nd run time as well running 30th, showing the technique that has made him one of Canada’s best SL skiers. Sam Mulligan followed up a fast first run with the second fastest 2nd run to claim 2nd overall ahead of Quebec’s Raphael Quenneville. Riley Seger finished 9th to round out a strong consistent series. BC Ski Team’s Max Peiffer capped a distinguished FIS career, which included a Canadian U18 Championship win, with an 11th place finish. WMSC’s Carson Llewellyn ended his FIS career in style as well, winning the 2nd run. WMSC’s Asher Jordan was 2nd U18 in 17th spot and Alexander Valentin, also of the WMSC, rounded out the U18 podium in 3rd.

Tyra Collombin showed her SL consistency claiming 2nd and BAR teammate Meg Cumming took the final podium spot, narrowly edging BC Ski Team’s Mikayla Martin by 4/100ths of a second. It was great to see Martin back on the course after a lengthy injury absence. Frances MacDonald and Nicole Mah, both of Grouse Tyee and the Vancouver Ski Team, were 1st and 2nd on the U18 podium.

This year’s spring series saw over 2,000 race runs spread over the week long event, and a tip of the hat goes to the RC, vollies and coaches who made it all happen in the face of challenging temperatures. WMSC showed the strength of the club, hosting the Senior Canadian Championships around Easter weekend, Whistler Cup in the first weekend of April and finally this Spring Series.

“It was a wild week of racing,” said BC Alpine Athletic Director Johnny Crichton. “Whistler Mountain provided an excellent venue with lots of challenging snow conditions. The WMSC did an incredible job of hosting an international field, with some young guns from Japan, as well as provincial racers from the big 4, and even National Team athletes from Canada and USA. Larry, the timing guy is a Jedi and never missed a time! Our own Stefanie Fleckenstein did the incredible and won all 6 races. She learned a lot about herself and what she's capable of this week. Tough snow and fast girls really made this event a true challenge.”

"I'm really proud of myself and my team for pushing ourselves to our limits mentally and physically over the past 6 days of racing," said Fleckenstein. "It hasn't been an easy season and the conditions for spring series were definitely challenging for everyone. I’m really excited about winning all six races, especially considering I've had a hard time finishing 6 races in a row this year, let alone winning them! I couldn't have performed the way I did this week without the support of my coaches, teammates and especially the course workers who made the races possible and fair."
