   Teck Coast Zone

U14/U16 Kinder Series GS

January 16-17, 2016

"A bit of a crazy weekend, with weather from heavy snow, high winds and rain, to blue skies and sunshine. A few technical difficulties and then chairlift problems, meaning second run day 2 couldn’t go off….BUT our club pulled it all together for a very successful event for the kids, which is what it is all about. Thanks to all the volunteers who made this happen." ~ Mt. Washington Ski Club news

FLASH QUOTES:

Riley Seger (WMSC) - "The whole field was charging it down this hill and I knew I had to go full gas and ski two cleans runs to be fast, pretty happy with how today went!" (SEE ON-HILL POST-RACE INTERVIEW)

PL Dumoulin (Men's Head Coach) - "Very happy with the effort the boys put in this weekend at COP. We just had a good week of training and the guys are starting to make some adjustments. Really happy for Riley, he has been skiing well for a while and it's good to see him put it together on back to back racing days. He is competitive in all disciplines at the moment, which is what we are looking for!"

NOR-AM MENS & LADIES SKI CROSS

Tabor Mountain Ski Resort

January 15 17, 2016

January 17, 2016, Tabor Mountain (from Ted Clarke, Prince George Citizen) - Tiana Gairns. a 17-year-old member of the Prince George Alpine Ski Club, had no trouble holding her nerves in check as the hometown favourite, and captured both NorAm Cup events Saturday and Sunday. Gairns, who started skiing at local resorts when she was two years old, was the fastest qualifier in an 11-skier women's field Saturday. She reeled off wins in her two heat races and was untouchable in the final, grabbing top spot on the podium over second-place Mara White of Squaw Valley, Calif., and third-place Courtney Hoffos of Invermere. Gairns also won Sunday's race, sharing the podium with silver medalist Zoe Chore of Kimberley and third-place Hoffos.

"It's quite an advantage to know the course. I've had three or four different races here and I know where all the berms are and where the good passing spots are and where I have to defend my line, which all the other girls had to learn just for this race," said Gairns. "I had lots of time to figure it out. Tabor has an amazing hill." - See more at: http://www.princegeorgecitizen.com/sports/gairns-grabs-gold-at-noram-ski-cross-1.2152820#sthash.h0o7PpoS.dpuf

Thompson, Werry to run famed Kitzbuhel Hahnenkamm downhill, Saturday

"Just a couple short years off the BC Team, Brod (Thompson) and Tyler (Werry) are running the Streif. In a time where extreme athletes rule and everyone thinks X-Games sports are the gnarliest, take a look at this. Although pictures and TV coverage never do the Hahnenkamm justice, this is without a doubt the craziest of the crazy. You have to see it to believe it. Just to make it down is a victory. Guys, you have joined an elite group of men in the world. Congratulations, you do BC proud." ~ Johnny Crichton, BC Alpine Athletic Director (from BC Alpine's Facebook page)

Classic slalom race on Mt. Seymour thrills athletes and spectators!

North Vancouver resident Jude Tear (Grouse Tyee Ski Club) and Squamish native Maja Woolley (Whistler Mountain Ski Club) were the individual recipients of the Enquist Slalom Trophies at this weekend’s alpine slalom races on Mt. Seymour.

Steeped in annual tradition since 1936, the two-day event was the 80’s anniversary of this classic slalom race. Hosted by Mount Seymour Ski Club, the competition featured two slalom races (one on Saturday and one on Sunday) for young men and women aged 14-16.

Lined with snow-draped pines and shrouded in intermittent fog, the easily accessible and spectator friendly “Seymour 16’s” run presented itself with the thrills and challenges that racers, organizers, volunteers and spectators have become accustomed to over many years of Mt. Seymour ski racing history. Roused by the hunt for the prestigious Enquist trophies, the young alpine racers put on a breathtaking show of skill and athleticism.

Other athletes on the podium included Nicola Filipovic (Burnaby) and John Forssander (North Vancouver) who won Silver and Bronze respectively in Saturday’s  “Overall” category – Jude Tear was the Gold winner.  The U16 Podiums on Saturday included Jude Tear (Gold),  Richmond native Dawson Yates (Silver) and North Vancouver resident Tom Sushams (Bronze) for the men, - while  Maja Woolley (Gold),  Port Moody resident Katrina Voss (Silver) and Vancouver native Meg Swaffield (Bronze) mounted the podium for the women.  On Sunday, Maja and Katrina repeated their Gold and Silver performances, closely followed by Whistler resident Gigi Kranjc who won the Bronze.  Vancouver native Olin Wakkary won the U16 Gold on Sunday, followed by Whistler’s Jack Forsyth (Silver) while Jude Tear picked up the Bronze.

Eric Konigsmann from the Vancouver Office of TECK and Eddie Wood of Mt. Seymour Resort presented awards at the post-race ceremonies.

Thank you to Hans Forssander, Media Liason for the Mount Seymour Ski Club, for providing the news AND the great photos posted here!

Big White Resort and the Big White Ski Club hosted the season opener Western Canada Ski Cross event January 22nd to 24th. 75 young athletes from BC, Alberta and Washington State charged the exceptional ski x track in hopes of podium finishes. Big White is the first stop is a 3 part series of races across the West for athletes U12 and older.

Racing commenced Saturday as mother nature blanketed the track with falling snow, but the conditions stayed solid and held up with a little help from the local course crew. This allowed the anxious competitors to complete their races in good spirits and offered some great spectator entertainment.  What a difference a day can make, Sunday offered a perfect bluebird race day resulting in some extremely competitive racing for all ages.

FLASH QUOTE:
Katie Fleckenstein (WMSC) - "I’ve been in 2 downhills before this week, and had a 1st and a 2nd, so I am pretty comfortable with the idea of racing DH. We have been training a bit of speed up at Whistler when the conditions allow, and coaches Boyd, Firstbrook and Levine have been really helpful with advice. I have never skied at Kimberly before, but I had 3 training runs over the weekend and seemed to find a line that I was comfortable with. On race day it was just a matter of letting go and trusting my line over the jumps and staying in my tuck as much as possible. After this speed series, the next 10 races are tech, so I’m hoping to bring some of this speed into tech, for sure. The hill is in great shape right now, pretty much perfect conditions. I’m looking forward to the SG and hope that I can adapt to the different set. I’m looking forward to the challenge. This event is really well run. The vollies are awesome and I have to give them a big shout out for the extra effort that they put in to make this a smooth running event."

FLASH QUOTES:

Stefanie Fleckesntein (BCST/WMSC) - “I am very excited about my result and skiing today, but I know I have a lot left in the tank for the upcoming races. I was able to adapt and fight hard through both runs, in places that I would have given up last year. The conditions out east have been unreal, considering the shortage of snow this season. The race organizers and hills have done an awesome job preparing the race runs for the competitors. This is my first race of the month and I'm very happy with how it has been going. I have managed to pull through and claim some career bests. It's a long season and we still have a lot of races so I'm still looking ahead to what's next!”

Ryan Jazic (Head Coach Women's BC Ski Team) - "It was not an easy race today, the hill here is tough and the snow is very hard. You had to ski with a plan and really fight to the finish. Stef did a very good job with that today, and to be on the podium in a Nor-Am was our goal, so it was a very good day today and should really help with the confidence of the whole team to prove we can ski at this level when it gets tough. Very proud coach today!"

Forty volunteers took early upload at 7am on day one to reach the Dave Murray National Training Centre in time for course preparation. Slip Crews were all skis on snow working feverishly along side course workers with shovels and rakes to clear the freshly fallen snow, in hopes the race could go off. Disappointment hovered as Doug Jevning, Chief of Race, had to make the call, “lets get it ready for tomorrow” he exclaimed, and the shovelers continued to move snow off the course, others rolled up nets in preparation for Super G Sunday and Monday…

Many athletes had a fantastic day hiking into flute bowl to get fresh tracks, then heading home to wax and prep SG skis for Sunday’s race.

Sunday’s weather was the best of the 4 day program with good light and well prepared snow thanks to our Volley’s and Whistler Blackcomb’s grooming team. The course was set by Jordan Williams and described by athletes as a turney Super G. Ladies started off with the following results:

1        Erin Dawson

2        Ella Renzoni

3        Julia Ross

4        Gigi Kranjc

5        Sierra King

6        Katrina Voss

7        Meg Swaffield

4        Jake Bennett

5        Nathan Romanin

6        Olin Wakkary

7        Dawson Yates

8        Lucas Gairns

5        Gigi Kranjc

6        Lucia Plunkett

7        Maja Woolley

8        Katrina Voss

9        Meg Swaffield

Monday brought soft conditions with sunshine and an inversion of 4 degree difference from Peak to Valley. If we could have run the race on Lower Dave Murray we’d have had perfect snow conditions, Mother Nature messing with us again. The schedule called for two Mens races and one Ladies, however as the snow softened and holes opened “safety first” dictated an early close to the day's events.

Men were out of the gate first with the following results:

1        Myles Kowalczyk

2        Nathan Romanin

3        Jack Forsyth

4        Konstantin Petkovic

5        Christian Callaghan

6        Dawson Yates

7        Lucas Gairns

8        Tom Sushams

9        Jude Tear

10      Jake Bennett

TECK OKANAGAN ZONE SPEED CAMP & ZONE DOWNHILL RACE

Silver Star Mountain Resort, hosted by the Vernon Ski Club - February 5 - 7, 2016

Thanks to everybody for pitching in and making it a great weekend for the athletes - seeing lightweight U12's go down the 1829 metre track and then the more seasoned U16/U18's, one appreciates the growth and changes in the athletes over the years.  Many VSC members stepped into new ROC roles and learned a few things - so kudos for taking the plunge.  A big thanks to our non-VSC vollies for helping out!

VSC welcomed Big White and Prince George, while enticing a couple of die-hard athletes from Apex and Revelstoke (who had been down the track before and remembered how fun it was) back for more.

The course ran well even with some light snow on race day. This is the same track used in the famed "Over-the-Hill-Downhill" event at Vernon's Winter Carnival.  Many thanks to SilverStar for ongoing support of the event and Alpine Ski Racing in BC!

Team BC Coaches

Head Coach – Leslie Firstbrook

Coach – Martin Tichy

Coach – Derek Trussler

Here's what a few of the racers have to say heading into the U18 Nationals:

Max Kirshenblatt 1998 WMSC
"I made the BC Team this year and have been training hard all season. My schedule has been pretty full-on and balancing school and racing takes a lot of work. I have learned so much from my older teammates on how to be a good team member in an individual sport, from supporting each other on and off the hill, to cooking, cleaning and always doing my part to make the system run smoothly. Something that I will pass on when I become one of the older athletes on a team. My best result would probably be my 24th in the Nor-Am super-G in Whiteface NY on Feb 11th. I am really looking forward to racing in Ontario and throwing down as hard as I can."

Kole Harle 1998 – Mt Washington / WMSC
"My name is Kole Harle (pronounced Cole Harley) and I am from Whistler BC. I grew up on Vancouver Island skiing on a small mountain called Mt Washington, known for its snowfall. In my free time I like to ski in the Terrain Park and surf. My highlight of the season is a 1st place (U18) in Norquay. Hopefully I can replicate that in Ontario, but I’d be happy with a top 5."

Katie Fleckenstein 1999 – WMSC
"I am from North Vancouver and I race for the Whistler Mtn Ski Club. This my first year skiing FIS. I have had some success so far this season, especially with 3 wins in speed. My older sister races for the BC Team and is doing very well and I hope to follow in her footsteps and then make my own path. I am heading to Ontario to throw down as hard as I can."

Soleil Patterson 1998 – Red Mountain Racers
"I live in Rossland B.C. and Red Mountain is my home hill.  Growing up as a ski racer in this small town has taught me everything I know, from cooperation with peers to self discipline and drive in all aspects of my life. Ski racing has brought me so many new opportunities that in other circumstances I would have never been able to obtain.  I am currently in my second year of FIS which has been both rewarding and challenging while balancing my grade 12 school work with ski racing.  This summer I was fortunate enough to train with the B.C. ski team, I learned what hard work really looks and feels like. Highlights from this season so far would include my two Super G wins in Nakiska and in Kimberly, and my various top three finishes in GS. My long term goal is to one day race the Cortina Downhill, in order to get myself there will require me to work hard and make myself the strongest and most dedicated version of myself. After seeing all the competition around the country I have come to the realization that I really do need to train even harder to achieve my goals. I would like to thank everyone from my family to my community for the enormous support I have received over the past few years."

Team BC is very excited to compete in Ontario. This is going to be a great series. Good luck to all.

National development team member Brodie Seger went from bib 41 to 3rd overall in the Feb 9th giant slalom. Teammate Jack Crawford stood beside him on the junior podium.

Nor-Am racers headed south to New York, specifically to the 1980 Olympic venue of Whiteface. Both men and women contested giant slalom, super-G and alpine combined in three days of racing.

The BC Team left Whiteface, NY with some very respectable results. Antonia Wearmouth and Stefanie Fleckenstein finished 4th and 5th respectively in Friday's Nor-Am super-G. In the men's SG Riley Seger started 33rd to finish 10th; Cameron Alexander started 51st and moved way up to an impressive 12th place finish; Sam Mulligan grabbed 18th spot overall; Dominic Unterberger wore bib 54 and came in 17th; Max Peiffer started 58th and came 23rd; Pat Carry started 60th and finished 28th; and rookie Max Kirshenblatt started 67th and closed the day in 38th place.

FLASH QUOTES:

PL Dumoulin (Head Coach Men’s BC Ski Team) - "I am happy with the results over the past couple of days in Whiteface. It's been tough so far this trip with a very competitive and deep field of international racers for these Nor-Am stops. The boys have been skiing well and battling hard, and it's good to see that it's starting to pay off in the last super-G and alpine combine today. Looking forward to bringing this momentum to our next stop in Bromont"

Ryan Jazic (Head Coach Women's BC Ski Team) - "It was a very good couple of days for the women's team! We've done a lot of speed trading in the off season and at Sun Peaks which has helped us prepare very well for the speed disciplines. We consider SG to be one of our strengths. Antonia has been battling some injuries lately but was able to put together her best performances so far this season with a fourth and fifth place, and Stef was able to finish with a very strong combined race (4th) and great 5th in the SG today. Hopefully we can keep building on these performances heading into a very busy race schedule coming up".

Cameron Alexander (BCST/WMSC) - "It was a bit of a tough Nor-Am race series, but it feels good to finish it off with a good result in the SG and the alpine combined."

Antonia Wearmouth (BCST/Grouse Tyee) - "These last few races were a big step in the right direction for me. For the first half of the season, I had been struggling to find the finish line with the speed I know I have in the tank. The super-G track in Whiteface is really sweet and the snow was perfect, so I'm really happy to have taken advantage of it. Having two strong finishes in a row is awesome and gets me excited for the next ones!”

Nick Cooper (Head Coach BC Alpine) - "This eastern Nor-Am swing has provided very strong competition on both the men's and women's side. The girls have proven they are some of the best young racers in North America, and the boys have battled hard against fields full of World Cup athletes. I'm very proud of the work this group has put in so far and look to continue to build from these series for the rest of the season."

Ryan Moffat at Youth Olympic Games

Hafjell Olympic Slope in Norway is home to the alpine competitions at the 2016 Lillehammer Youth Olympic Games. With Opening Ceremonies celebrating 1,100 athletes from 40 countries behind them, it was the globe's top U18 racers in the super-G speed event that lead the way on the first day of competition.

With 55 men to start the day, in the end for Canada it was Ontario’s Justin Alkier taking 19th and Kelowna’s Ryan Moffat clocking in just over 2 seconds off the pace for a  21st finish.

“I was running out of gas towards the bottom, but hung on”, said Moffat, the Okanagan Ski Team member.

For the ladies Ontario’s Ali Nullmeyer placed a very impressive 7th behind Austria (1 and 2), Switzerland (3 and 4), Germany (5) and host Norway 6th while BC racer Amelia Smart from Invermere (formerly Vernon) finished 19th.
